Plato de 7 lados X is a fairly simple project that started as a test for my newly acquired CNC router machine but quickly escalated into a fairly simple and quick product for an “office” setting.

The beauty of this plate lies in natural lines created by the wood fiber. You can see that this continuous flow helps your eyes navigate through the edges which adds up kind of and endless factor to the piece. This beautiful illusion comes from the wonderful capabilities of a CNC machine and well selected piece of wood.

The name comes from a word play in Spanish and an over explanation of the aspects of the plate. An heptagon with an twisted X in the middle. I really like the idea of naming things with tricky and logical sense of humor, and this creation is no exception to that.

You may be able to see that some the inner edges are a kind of rough and this was a problem I encountered with using a single flute strait router bit. This could have been eliminated if I used an offset tool path in the direction of the cut rather then a raster tool path. Just in case you are new or experimenting with a CNC router, do not forget to take into account both the number of flutes of your cutting tool and the path your tool takes as this will drastically improve finish and save you manual work.

Version 2.0 of Plato de 7 lados X is in the making and for this I bough a couple of Whiteside spiral end mill bits which will significantly increase the end result. Expect stunning pictures soon!

What do you think about this plate? Would you like one in your office or home? Please let me know any input you might have regarding this design.
