Catch-all Capsule Tray

I’m fine like that, fine like that, fine

I believe that a good way of starting a business is by selling something affordable, tangible and representative. For me this is the Catch-all Capsule Tray which currently reflects my design style, it has a convenient size and it’s affordable.

As I’ve mentioned before (Creacionha Homepage), one of the main points of my designs is to spark a conversation. In this project this is achieved thanks to the beautiful layers that plywood offers and an eye catching but simple capsule profile which when seen the first question that comes to mind is, how was this made? If you have the same question then good, my intention came through and if you keep reading you will know the answer.

The main inspiration for this project was the idea of exploring with circles which are not a simple thing to achieve with traditional woodworking tools (you might need some template or guide jig) unlike squares or right angles. On the other hand, circles are something CNC machines can do fairly easily and thanks to that advantage I opted to create a capsule-like tray with a side recess for quick access and a separation made from the silhouette of one of the base circles.

Once the overall form was determined it was time to get down to sizing which is something crucial in every design due to it determining most of its uses. Basically if the tray was too small its function would be limited to those types of objects such as earrings, coins, etc., and vice versa, if the tray was too big it would look kind of empty when filled with regular size objets. With all of this in mind I went and measured what is probably the most used item in the world, a cell phone, and based on that determined the size as was looking for.

As you can see, large cell phones as the new Iphone fit perfectly in the main pocket and even leave some space for a pen or pencil. This is something intentional and thought to restrict the amount of objects someone can cram into it, which should prevent an overboarding look when a cell phone is in the equation.

You can also see there are a lot of uses for this tray which range from it being used as an office organiser up to a coaster/tray combo for a restaurant. Currently this product is up for sale for around $5 dollars (100 pesos) and if you like it don’t hesitate and contact me via Instagram to make a deal!
