Soap

You’re gonna wanna be my best friend, baby

By Herick Acosta

Soap is something we use in our everyday life and as most of our household products,we don’t care nor take the time to know more about them. I became interested in soaps about 2 years ago when I saw a video on YouTube from “How to make everything” channel in which he took on the challenge of making soap by harvesting all the natural ingredients needed for it. This of course was a bit too extreme for my possibilities but regardless, it planted in me the idea of soap making as something I could do.

Latest soap video from HTME which I highly recommend, please take the time to watch it, you will learn a lot!

After seeing a couple of videos and gazing over some articles the process was clear and the goal was set, I wanted to make soaps and I knew how. That day and for the next 2 years no soaps were made.

Luckily, not long ago HTME posted another soap making video and after seeing that my brain exploded and the idea stuck into my brain. I was not letting this pass and quickly talked about it with my girlfriend. About 3 days later we had our first soaps and we were both really happy, especially myself.

After a couple of batches and some research I now see how simple soap making is a. Basically soap needs 3 things, fat, lye and water. The tricky part comes in the ratios needed. There is no golden standard for a soap making recipe but in my experience usually lye represents around 10%, water 20% and fats 70%.

I recommend the use of a recipe when making soap as this will eliminate the calculations needed to achieve saponification. My recommendation is to follow the recipe shared in the DIY Natural post which works great and all the materials for it are commonly available in every big box store

Above you can see my latest soaps which still need tweaking to be honest with you. The consistency and feeling of the soap is awesome, but the problem is the lack of a strong fragrance. Currently I am working the recipe and I think the next batch will be much much closer to the final product.

I do intent to sell this babies but they are not ready yet, wait for them!
